Services > Spectrum Clinic
The Spectrum Clinic offers comprehensive evaluations of adolescents (12 years and older) and adults when there is concern for a possible autism spectrum disorder. A typical evaluation consists of a 3-4 hour appointment with one of our psychologists. Oftentimes at the conclusion of this appointment, feedback regarding diagnostic impressions and treatment recommendations can be verbally provided, with a detailed written report mailed within a week.
Many families of adolescents suspected of having an autism spectrum disorder and adults who themselves question if they have an autism spectrum disorder have questions about the evaluation process, if it is right for them, too late, or worth initiating.
To request an appointment through the Spectrum Clinic, please call our office. During this call, our office manager will:
- Schedule 3 to-4-hour appointment with our psychologist.
- Gather necessary information and provide instructions for completing your prework.
Families / Individuals will receive an electronic packet of questionnaires to assist with gathering of critical information prior to the first appointment. This will include information regarding medical, developmental, and educational history. There will also be parent / self / teacher rating scales to aid in the assessment of functional skills, social and emotional development, and behavior.
Families / Individuals are encouraged to provide copies of previous psychological / psychiatric evaluations, medical records, or school records (e.g., IEP, 504 Plan). This can help us to compile an accurate and complete picture of needs, barriers, and strengths, leading to individualized and comprehensive recommendations and guidance around next steps.
During the initial 3-4 hour appointment, you can expect to:
- Participate in a diagnostic interview involving review of developmental history, discussing past and current communication, socialization, and behavior, as well as assessing for possible concerns regarding mood, anxiety, attention, etc.
- Complete the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, Second Edition (ADOS-2) *The ADOS is not routinely being conducted during COVID. The Childhood Autism Rating Scale, Second Edition (CARS-2) is being utilized in its place*
- Complete the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised (ADI-R)
In some instances, diagnostic impressions and recommendations can be reviewed at the conclusion of the assessment appointment. A detailed written report will be sent to the patient / family within 1-2 weeks of the assessment. A feedback session is scheduled to review the diagnosis (if any) and recommendations for treatment (if any). Patients may be referred for treatment within Barlow & Adams Behavioral Health and outside providers or other services may also be recommended.
